Tekni-Films introduces COMPASS: a simulation model to predict thermoformability and barrier properties for blister pockets containing pharmaceutical oral solid dosage forms.

Somerville, NJ – Tekni-Films, a division of the Tekni-Plex company, has introduced its new blister package modeling system as a service to support pharmaceutical packaging development. The system, known as COMPASS, will generate a 3-dimensional map showing the blister package wall thickness distribution as well as the 3-dimensional distribution of the blister’s Water Vapor Transmission Rate. Such simulation allows pharmaceutical packaging engineers to predict the WVTR and thermoformability of blister pack prior to the manufacture of tools.

During the packaging development phase of a New Drug Product, the COMPASS system allows a more precise pre-selection of barrier films. Moreover, for a given size and shape of the dosage form, tool design options can be evaluated showing the impact on the overall barrier of the blister pocket and area’s of concern for excessive film thinning. The system is based on the techniques of Finite Element Modeling and incorporates knowledge on Tekniflex material properties such as WVTR values of biaxial oriented films.
